The report mentions that Netflix and Rodriguez are partnering together to “relaunch and reimagine” the franchise with a new generation in mind. Rodriguez will reportedly write, direct, and produce the new feature project, with Netflix formally announcing the project exactly 21 years after the first Spy Kids released in theaters in 2001.
Plot details for the new Spy Kids film are being kept under wraps, but The Hollywood Reporter notes that the current intention is to introduce a new family of spies. It’s unclear whether or not any of the original cast — including Antonio Banderas or Carla Gugino — will return to reprise their roles in any capacity.

The original Spy Kids franchise starred Banderas and Gugino as two spies who are kidnapped, with their children (played by Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara) tasked with saving them while also uncovering the family’s secret past of espionage. Originally released in 2001, the franchise spawned three official sequels, with the latest being 2011’s Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, which starred Jessica Alba and Joel McHale.
