Puddle of Mudd’s Wes Scantlin is once again catching flak after a messy performance at a benefit show on Saturday (March 1st) during Daytona Bike Week in Florida, and now the frontman is claiming that he was drugged prior to the set.
Puddle of Mudd were booked to headline the benefit gig, which included an auction for a signed guitar, proceeds benefitting St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. The afternoon started out on a positive note, with the guitar fetching a winning bid of $5,000.
Then Puddle of Mudd took the stage, and things apparently went downhill fast. Multiple comments on the Facebook page for the venue Broken Spoke Saloon described Puddle of Mudd’s set as “terrible,” mainly due to Scantlin’s impaired stage presence.
“Last night’s show was a total disaster,” read one comment. “I felt really bad for the rest of his band.” Another added, “Good thing the guitar was auctioned off before they went on.”
The following day, Scantlin was stopped outside the venue and asked, on video, about the benefit show.
“I suck, I suck and I suck … but I was roofied,” Scantlin said in the video posted to the Facebook account Cash4HarleyParts.com (watch below).
“My old bass player Sean Sammon roofied me last night, so he can go fuck his ass,” added Scantlin before flipping double birds at the camera.
Drugged or not, the incident continues a trend of train-wreck performances from Scantlin, including onstage meltdowns and his regrettable cover of Nirvana’s “About a Girl.” The singer-guitarist has also had several run-ins with the law over the past decade, including being pepper-balled by a SWAT team last year.
Wes Scantlin’s next-day reaction and a clip of Puddle of Mudd’s performance can both be seen below.
