There’s nothing significantly wrong with Marty, but it pales in comparison to the original television version that aired on Philco Television Playhouse. Its slight story of a bachelor who makes a connection with another lonely soul works better at an hour than at 90 minutes — or at least the extra scenes in the big-screen version don’t add anything significant — and Rod Steiger and Nancy Marchand brought a rougher, darker edge to the sadness surrounding the Marty and Clara characters than Ernest Borgnine and BetsyBlair do here. The movie’s not bad — it’s the best movie on this list for sure — but it also seems strange to me to give an Oscar to the inferior version of TV movie.
