For those who did not grow up in the 1980s, let me explain: Three Amigos was one of those VHS tapes that was found in almost every home, stacked besides things like The Goonies and Back to the Future. It was ubiquitous and beloved by kids who mostly had no frame of reference for its jokes about silent cinema. (Come to think of it, this movie might have introduced me to the very idea that some old movies were silent.) It never would have occurred to me back then that critics mostly dismissed Three Amigos, and that even today, after Three Amigos has long since attained cult movie status, that it would still hold a lowly 44 percent.
