Viewed back to back,XXLis clearly better than the originalMagic Mike. Jettisoning several of the characters (including the ones played by Alex Pettyfer and Matthew McConaughey) eliminated the clichéd drugs-and-greed-were-his-undoing storyline that dragged down the second half ofMagic Mike. It also opened up a lot of screen time for the rest of the Kings of Tampa, who were very much confined to the margins the first time around, and here become a true ensemble.

While the first movie was all about business, this one’s squarely focused on pleasure, most notably with the addition of several more compelling female characters who aren’t just marks for the Kings to fleece. In fact, in a total 180 from the first film, these guys aren’t really looking to score; all they want to do is express themselves. They ditch the stripper clichésin favor of dances and personas that speak to who they truly are. ConsiderXXL’s reprise of “Pony,” which is easily one of the greatest dance numbers of the century. Instead of gyrating on stage for tips at Xquisite, Tatum dances this time for the pure joy of it. No one’s watching — except the film’s audience, of course.
