Alina Starkov has to face unpredictable challenges in Shadow & Bone Season 2. The young adult series is already available on Netflix, showcasing the new adventures of the Sun Summoner, Mel, Kaz, and the others. Alina will also meet new friends who will have to do their part in taking on the villainous General Kirigan. Ahead of the season’s premiere, ComingSoon spoke with the cast about the challenges they and their respective characters had to overcome in the new episodes.
“In Season 2, Alina Starkov is on the run. A beacon of hope to some and a suspected traitor to others, she’s determined to bring down the Shadow Fold and save Ravka from ruin. But General Kirigan has returned to finish what he started. Backed by a terrifying new army of seemingly indestructible shadow monsters and fearsome new Grisha recruits, Kirigan is more dangerous than ever,” reads the synopsis.
“To stand a fighting chance against him, Alina and Mal rally their own powerful new allies and begin a continent-spanning journey to find two mythical creatures that will amplify her powers. Back in Ketterdam, the Crows must forge new alliances as they contend with old rivals and even older grudges that threaten not only their place in the Barrel, but their very lives. When a chance at a deadly heist comes their way, the Crows will once again find themselves on a collision course with the legendary Sun Summoner.”
Jessie, how is it to pass from being everyone’s favorite to the realm’s most wanted?
Jessie Mei Li: It was exciting how we leave Alina at the end of Season 2. You have no idea where the story’s gonna go after that kind of cliffhanger. It was really interesting to play Alina as she’s trying all these new things and trying to be a leader and having so many different forces against her. It was really exciting playing up against all of those challenges for her.
Freddy, Season 2 opens with Kaz and the others returning to Ketterdam and finding out they lost the Crow Club. How would you describe Kaz’s responsibilities as a leader in the sophomore season?
Freddy Carter: He’s a great leader in lots of ways in that he pulls together the very best people for the job. They may look like a ragtag bunch, but they’re perfect for what he needs them for. Over the course of Season 2, he gets blindsided by his own sort of personal vendettas and he puts everyone at risk, which is obviously not a great thing to do as a leader.
Lewis, how is it to be introduced in a successful series like Shadow and Bone, and how was your relationship with the original cast?
Lewis Tan: It was great, actually. It was way easier than I expected. I think that sometimes you get worried that you’re gonna be introduced to a group of people who are really talented and the show, the first season was great, and maybe there’s no place for you or maybe they’re not gonna be as welcoming. They were extremely welcoming, supportive, fun. We all would go to each other’s houses after set and we would eat food together and have dance parties together and do karaoke together and it ended up being one of those things that you ended up having a very delightful experience to be on set, which made the process a lot easier ’cause it was a hard shoot, physically.
