This chewy, fruity candy was a staple in stores all through the 1980s. It was best known for its series of strange commercials, featuring a dowdy bespectacled woman commenting on various misconceptions about Bonkers (it’s not gum!) while giant fruits fell from the sky, usually onto her family members. Very strange stuff — and so is the fact that Bonkers were quite popular all throughout the decade, but then lost so much market share that production ceased entirely just a few years later. The most common Bonkers flavors included grape, strawberry, and my personal favorite, watermelon, which made clever use of the candy’s two-color design, with a green exterior and a chewy red interior.
