Full of over-the-top gore, violence, simulated human-on-human cannibalism, and unsimulated animal cruelty, Cannibal Holocaust was banned in multiple countries (in some it still is) and strictly censored, considered to be one of the most notorious exploitation films ever made. To this day, film historians can’t agree on whether its graphic violence acts as a commentary on the journalistic exploitation of indigenous cultures or an exploitation of those very cultures. Still, it is undeniably influential, as its use of found footage came decades before The Blair Witch Project and its imitators turned it into a trope.
