Each week, Consequence rings in New Music Friday by highlighting new albums to stream. We’re almost at the end of October, and there are plenty of great new records to check out this week.
Among the highlights are the excellent new album from Consequence cover stars Amyl and the Sniffers; new releases from alt-rock veterans Pixies, Tears For Fears, and Laura Marling; exciting live recordings from Florence + The Machine and Crosby Stills Nash & Young; and an expansive box set celebrating the 20th anniversary of Green Day’s American Idiot.

Amyl and the Sniffers – Cartoon Darkness
Aussie punks Amyl and the Sniffers are back with their first new album in three years, Cartoon Darkness. Following their exhilarating 2021 sophomore effort Comfort to Me, the act cut the record at Foo Fighters’ 606 Studios in Los Angeles. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – Live At the Fillmore East, 1969
55 years ago, folk-rock group Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young set out on their first tour as a quartet following a successful performance at Woodstock. That tour included four performances at New York’s Fillmore East, one of which is now being made into a live album. The 17-track album displays everything that the band was capable of, from their slower acoustic songs to their absolutely rocking jams.

Florence + The Machine – Symphony of Lungs (BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall)
Florence + the Machine have been relatively quiet since the 2022 release of their last album Dance Fever, but now, Florence Welch and co. are back to celebrate the 15th anniversary of their debut album Lungs. The new live album is a recording of the group’s special show in London last month, where they played Lungs in full backed by Jules Buckley and his Orchestra. It’s out digitally today, but those looking for a physical release will have to wait until March 14th, 2025.

Green Day – American Idiot (20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)
After celebrating the 20th anniversary of their seminal album American Idiot by playing it in full throughout their 2024 “Saviors Tour,” Green Day are now releasing a deluxe edition of the record. The new anniversary package features 15 unreleased demo recordings, a live performance of the band’s 2004 concert at Irving Plaza in New York City, B-sides, bonus tracks, and a heck of a lot more.

Halsey – The Great Impersonator
It’s been over three years since Halsey released their last album, the immersive and moving If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power. With The Great Impersonator, the singer-songwriter and alt-pop artist pivots, mining decades of music history for her creative jumping-off points. The album, the fifth LP in her canon, is designed as an interrogation of what it means to be authentic as an artist — and if it’s even possible at all. It’s the sort of angle that earned Halsey many dedicated fans in the first place.

Katie Gavin – What A Relief
Katie Gavin is taking a break from MUNA to pursue her solo career with the release of her debut album, What A Relief. The project provides a home for a slew of tracks written over the course of 7 years that she and her bandmates felt “didn’t quite fit within the universe they were trying to cultivate for MUNA.” Inspired by the likes of Alanis Morissette and Fiona Apple, the introspective record is about “having a really deep desire for connection, but also encountering all the obstacles that stood in [her] way to be able to achieve that, patterns of isolation or even boredom with the real work of love.”

Kelsea Ballerini — Patterns
When Kelsea Ballerini dropped an EP titled Rolling Up the Welcome Mat in 2023, everything changed for the country-pop singer. While Ballerini had a number of crossover hits by that point, Welcome Mat unlocked an entirely new level of vulnerability; now, with Patterns, that specific part of her story continues. She’s assembled a superstar team of female co-writers and producers, including Karen Fairchild of Little Big Town, and her musical universe is expanding in engrossing ways.

Laura Marling – Patterns in Repeat
It’s been four years since Laura Marling last released an album, yet her latest, Patterns in Repeat, shines a light on a profoundly special moment one can be blessed with in adulthood: stepping into motherhood following the birth of her first child. As any parent knows, adjusting to this new normal can be challenging at times, but Marling draws on her compellingly heartfelt lyricism and indie folk arrangements to articulate the inner workings of her mind. In a reflection on the LP, Marling expressed that the record explores “the drama of the domestic sphere, the frail threads that bind a family together, the good intentions we hold onto for our progeny and the many and various ways they get lost in time.”

Pixies – The Night the Zombies Came
Late-era Pixies have proven to be quite prolific, as the veteran indie act is back with another new album, The Night the Zombies Came. Partially inspired by the spookiness of the season (and arriving just in time for Halloween!), the record’s 13 tracks touch on everything from surf rock to 12th-century poetry to gargoyles and bog people.

Pom Pom Squad – Mirror Starts Moving Without Me
Former Consequence CoSign Pom Pom Squad returns with their new album Mirror Starts Moving Without Me, the New York indie outfit’s third album and follow-up to the acclaimed Death of a Cheerleader. Out via City Slang, Mirror Starts Moving Without Me finds songwriter Mia Berrin reflecting on her childhood, mental health, and overall identity.

Soccer Mommy – Evergreen
Soccer Mommy is back with Evergreen, her fourth album and first since 2022’s excellent Sometimes, Forever. Though the album has a larger emphasis on a more organic, contemplative sound, there are still a few rousing surprises, like the fuzzy singles “Driver” and “Abigail.” Plus, she’s got a major North American tour coming up next year, so you can get the ultimate Soccer Mommy experience by seeing her live.

Tears For Fears – Songs for a Nervous Planet
Tears for Fears caused quite an uproar when fans discovered that their newest project, Songs For A Nervous Planet, showcases AI-generated artwork for its cover. Despite the outcry, the band stood by their decision and forged on with the rollout. Songs For A Nervous Planet masterfully blends the old and new, presenting 4 previously unreleased tracks alongside a collection of live performances to round out the 22-track project. The album will release in conjunction with a concert film that will premiere in over 1,100 theaters worldwide.
