Fans have shared mixed opinions online about Carrie. The adaptation of Stephen King’s debut novel takes several liberties with the source material, including shifting the story’s setting 50 years into the future. However, despite the criticism, Prime Video has announced that the series will return for a second season.
Now that the show’s streaming numbers are becoming public, it’s easier to understand why Amazon decided to continue the series. With rave reviews from critics and a No. 1 ranking among Prime Video shows in multiple major markets, Carrie had a strong case for a second season, even as fans wonder how the story will continue.
What are Stephen King fans saying about Carrie Season 2?
The biggest concern fans have about a second season of Carrie is how the story will continue. The first season adapted the entire novel but made a slight change to its ending. With Carrie surviving the events of the finale, it remains unclear what Season 2 will explore. Many fans believe that continuing the story could unnecessarily stretch the narrative.
However, show creator Mike Flanagan said, “For 50 years, audiences have known and gravitated to Carrie White’s story. From the beginning, we imagined a story that goes far beyond the prom, and I’m incredibly grateful for Stephen’s trust and support in exploring what comes next.”
With Stephen King himself involved in what comes next for Carrie White, the character’s story appears to be in good hands. King famously objected to the changes made to Jack Torrance in The Shining, as he felt the film reduced the character to a more one-dimensional figure.
In contrast, Carrie has not only updated its titular character but also added more nuance to her portrayal. King’s involvement, therefore, suggests that he is open to the adaptation expanding Carrie White’s story beyond the original novel.
