Maybe the title is a giveaway, but, yes, Spike Jonze’s Adaptation is indeed an adaptation — of an article, no less. Kind of. A fictional version of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman (played by Nicolas Cage, who also plays his fictional twin) experiences crippling writer’s block while attempting to adapt Susan Orlean’s nonfiction book The Orchid Thief, itself based on an article she published in The New Yorker. Orlean’s source material investigated the arrest of a horticulturist and uncovered a cabal of South Floridian rare plant poachers. Kaufman’s script explored the agonies of creative blockage, to which Orlean’s true crime yarn is often little more than set dressing. The real Orlean was skeptical, initially, but allowed the film to go forward, and said afterward that eventually she grew to love it.
