A popular NBC TV show is taking a hiatus in the coming week to pay respect to a legendary late-night show’s final run.
What popular NBC TV show is taking a brief hiatus?
In “a sign of late-night solidarity,” NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon has announced that it will be airing a rerun on Thursday, May 21, so as not to compete with the final episode of CBS’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (via THR).
It’s not the only show doing this, as Jimmy Kimmel Live! has already announced that they plan to go dark on the same night to honor Colbert’s run. While it’s only a week-long hiatus, this is still a pretty rare move for the show.
“Late night is one of those things that’s been around our whole lives where it kind of it’s just part of our lives,” Fallon said on The Late Show. “I never thought it was a job when I was growing up. I just thought Johnny Carson came with the television set. People wanna go to sleep, have a good laugh and go to bed happy.”
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert ran for 11 seasons, starting in September 2015. After over 1700 episodes, Colbert will be signing off on a long era of television, as CBS is ending The Late Show franchise altogether. Colbert’s farewell will be attended by Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, and John Oliver, who are set to join Kimmel tonight on The Late Show for a Strike Force Five podcast reunion. Colbert will also be joined by David Letterman, his predecessor on TheLate Show.
While Colbert won’t be hosting late-night TV, he will be busy writing aLord of the Ringsproject alongside his son,Peter.
The Tonight Show will return on May 22, with Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal attending as guests, with Maluma appearing as the musical guest.
